As part of my thesis project I created a timeline to catalog major design developments that drew inspiration from nature. I then compared the date of publication for scientific papers that were the basis for these innovations. It became clear that years and sometimes decades pass before designers and engineers create products or processes originating from scientific discovery. This delay may be due to technological limitations, but is also the likely result of research lacking broader visibility beyond members of the scientific community.
My thesis topic went on to address this question: How can designers be inspired by nature to create sustainable innovations?
